CALL OUT TO ARTISTSworking with Burnside Gorge Community Center @ The Fifty FiftyCALL OUT TO ARTISTS
The fifty fifty arts collective is working with Burnside Gorge Community Center to develop an arts program for the youth drop-in for males and females, ages 9 to 17.
Youth programs and services build the assets of local youth that allow them to succeed and become contributing citizens. Burnside Gorge strives to build these assets in our youth by providing support, empowerment and constructive use of time. The aim of the arts program is to provide a non judgmental, non graded atmosphere where youth can learn and experiment with artistic media, build a portfolio, understand what it means to be an artist and have a good time. We want to exhibit the artwork made by the youth in the center, both as a way of sharing ideas and of taking ownership of the youth drop-in space. We also hope to have a public exhibition at the fifty fifty arts collective.
As such we are looking for artists willing to contribute to the program by sharing their skills and experiences. Sessions will begin in mid to late January and will be for 2 to 3 hours on Wednesday evenings, held at the Burnside Gorge Community Center. Artists are not expected to contribute more that one session (though all the help we can get is most welcome).
Photography, sculpture, graffiti/street art, painting, drawing, jewellery making, film and video, and collage are a some of the suggestions we have received that the kids at Burnside would like to learn about and all other suggestions are welcome.
If you are interested please email us at thefiftyfifty@gmail.com with a name and contact info and a suggested contribution.

SPILLby Rebekah Johnson @ The Fifty Fifty Originally, Spill (1 - Sunlight) was shown in an all white room, at the Vancouver Island School of Art, burnt out light bulbs a metaphor for sunlight spilling through an imaginary window. Illuminated from below by a single fluorescent source, the bulbs glowed preternaturally, light ricocheting off the walls.
In Spill (2 - Window), at the Slide Room Gallery (group show – Analog) a real window in the gallery space became the focal point for the spill of bulbs – natural light and fluorescent played across the glass and out into the room.
In Spill (3 - Veil ), reconfigured for the 50/50, the light bulbs are suspended vertically, completely filling the window. Lit from below and within, light is cast through the bulbs, forming a curtain. Inside the gallery, framed companion pieces lure us into the gallery and behind the veil.
By turns meditative, playful and beautiful, the Spills are a light-hearted examination of perception.
Rebekah holds a BFA (Theatre) and an MFA (Visual Art) both from the University of Victoria. Link: https://www.facebook.com/...Artists: Rebekah Johnson |

POSTa fifty fifty fundraiser project @ The Fifty Fifty POST follows in the footsteps of the long standing tradition of Mail Art, with the intention to involve as many artists within Victoria, Canada and further afield and to generate exciting interpretations of what a post card can be.
As such we are seeking post card donations from the Victoria arts community, to be catalogued on the POST website and sold during an exhibition at the fifty fifty gallery space on 25th and 26th of February 2012. All funds raised as a result of the project will be fed directly back in to the fifty fifty for future arts programmes.
The show has no jury, no entry fee, there is no censorship, all works are accepted. Anyone can submit their works as long as it is postcard sized and shaped!
